Description

WHAT IS A STOP SQUARE?

The try square is also called a rafter square, or speed square and is shaped like an isosceles right-angled triangle with a stop at one side. The numerous scales and recesses make the try square a multifunctional tool, ideal for marking lines and angles, as well as for use as a scribing tool and saw guide. Try squares are usually made of steel, aluminum, or plastic and are marked with metric units (millimeters, centimeters) or imperial units (inches). Common metric sizes include 18 cm and 30 cm, as well as the imperial sizes 7 inches and 12 inches.

WHERE IS A STOP SQUARE USED?

The different scales and recesses of the rafter square, as well as the practical stop edge, are particularly ideal for working with wood – whether in carpentry, joinery, or joinery. The rafter square originally comes from the Americas, where it is still used primarily in carpentry for roof construction and rafters. Hence the name rafter square. The rafter square can be used to determine the pitch or angle for common rafters, hip rafters, valley rafters, and rafter rafters.

WHAT FUNCTIONS DOES THE SOLA STOP SQUARE HAVE?

The SOLA try square combines the functions of a ruler, try square, miter square, protractor, marking aid, saw guide, and rafter gauge. The rafter square, shaped like a right triangle, has a robust stop on one side for precise 90° and 45° markings. In conjunction with its robust edge, the stop also serves as a sawing aid or saw guide. Parallel to the stop is a recess with a metric scale in mm and cm (offset scale), ideal for marking vertical lines. The measuring leg of the other side also has a metric scale, allowing for quick measurements. Below this scale is a recess with notches for marking horizontal or parallel lines. The hypotenuse has a degree scale for angle measurements between 0° and 90°. The desired angle is determined based on the opposite pivot point (designated on the rafter square: PIVOT). Parallel to the degree scale is another recess with two scales for rafter cuts. The lower scale is for common rafters or standard rafters (designated on the rafter angle: COMMON), and the upper scale is for hip rafters and valley rafters (designated on the rafter angle: HIP-VAL). A 90° marking aid for purlin cuts runs at right angles to the degree scale.

WHAT DO THE HIP-VAL AND COMMON SCALES ON THE STOP ANGLE TRIANGLE MEAN?

A special function of the stop square, which is used primarily in the Americas, is cutting roof rafters. The SOLA rafter square has its own scale for common rafters, hip rafters and valley rafters. The lower COMMON scale can be used to cut standard rafters for a roof. Standard rafters are the rafters that run straight down from the ridge. The scale is based on the pitch of the rafter, which is specified in decimeters per meter. There is a conversion table on the back of the SOLA stop square. The table shows that, for example, a pitch of 1 decimeter per meter corresponds to an angle of 5.71°. The upper HIP-VAL scale is suitable for hip and valley rafters that run diagonally from the ridge of the roof rather than straight down. Since hip and valley rafters are longer than normal rafters, the HIP-VAL scale must be used for cutting.
