Shipping within Europe

As you may have already seen from other retailers, the new European packaging regulations are currently causing significant challenges for many businesses.

Unfortunately, we are affected as well. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to ship only within Austria and Germany from now on.

First of all, we fully support the idea that companies should take responsibility for the packaging they place on the market. We have no issue with that principle.

The problem is the way it has been implemented.

Instead of creating a truly harmonized solution for the European Single Market, many countries still require separate registrations, individual packaging registers, different reporting obligations and, in some cases, even the appointment of a local authorized representative. This creates annual fixed costs, ongoing administrative work and different compliance requirements for every single country.

For small and medium-sized family businesses, this has become increasingly difficult to justify. While large corporations have dedicated compliance departments, smaller businesses are expected to meet the same obligations with only a handful of employees.

What makes this especially frustrating is that many of these countries were never major markets for us. In many cases, we simply supplied spare parts to customers who had no local importer or alternative source in their own country. Unfortunately, we can no longer offer this service.

In the end, the decision comes down to a simple business reality:

Do the sales generated in a particular country justify the costs, registrations, reporting obligations and administrative effort required to serve that market?

For us, the honest answer is no.

It is particularly disappointing because Europe has already shown that harmonized solutions are possible. The introduction of a common currency is one example. Yet, when it comes to packaging compliance within the European Single Market, businesses are still faced with a patchwork of national requirements instead of one practical, unified system.

Ultimately, it is not only retailers who are affected. Consumers also lose access to specialist products, spare parts and smaller retailers that simply cannot justify the growing compliance burden.

We sincerely hope that a truly harmonized, practical and business-friendly European solution will become reality in the future. Until then, we will continue focusing on providing the best possible service to our customers in Austria and Germany.

Thank you for your understanding and for your continued trust.
