The kickback stop, as the name suggests, prevents the plunge saw from kicking back during complicated plunge cuts as the saw blade cuts into the wood. This is prevented by mechanically holding the rear guide table down.
You can also use it to easily limit your cutting area, especially if you need to repeatedly cut a lot of the same lengths.
